Making your Presentation Standout!

It is almost expected that if you are conducting a seminar or workshop that you will have a power- point presentation or slides to accompany your message.  The danger occurs, however, when you as the presenter rely too heavily on the slides for your script or direction.  Too often presenters end up reading the slides  and as a result shifts the audiences focus to reading as well.  Power-points were originally designed to be an “aid”,  however most speakers have forgotten the meaning of this word.  The best speakers use slides only to further illustrate a point or to summarize or hit home a point.  Excuse my bluntness, but you will find it very difficult to truly connect with your audience unless you restrict your slide content and usage.

If you are in sales, or in corporate settings, presentations may be critical to your bottom line and to your career. I want to challenge you to re-think how you may do your presentation differently. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking it has to be done a certain way in order to be effective. You may discover that an uncommon way may actually yield better results .

Darren LaCroix, 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking emphasizes the importance of hitting the “B” button on your keyboard at strategic points during your presentation. The “B” key makes the screen go blank, so the audience is not distracted by what’s on the screen when you insert a story or make a compelling point. This allows the presenter control over how much focus is given to the visuals or aids and to how much intentional focus on engaging the audience and connecting at deeper levels.

LaCroix reminds us that “powerful presentations are ones in which presenters connect with the audience through the power of their words – the power of their delivery.”

When you spend most of your time looking at your slides instead of your audience you weaken one of the most important goals of public speaking- making a meaningful connection with your audience.

See you next week!
