“Are You a 3-D Speaker! – Part 2
You are learning about becoming a “3-D Speaker” and the importance of paying attention to the three dimensions of every speaking opportunity. Last week you picked up tips on the first dimension: What you say! This week’s tip is on the second dimension: How you say it!
I like how Jim Key summarized the importance of these two dimensions when he said that,
“The effective speech will appeal to the audience’s senses and give them something to remember while also connecting in a very real and tangible way with their minds and hearts.”
In addition to knowing what points you want to leave with your audience you want to ask yourself these questions as well.
What do you want your audience to feel as they listen to your speech?
What do you want your audience to think about when they are listening to you?
How do you want them to experience you and your message?
This second dimension is all about how you deliver your message. Great speakers not only appeal to the audience’s intellect but also to their emotions. Why is this important? When you connect with someone at the heart level your message gets imprinted deeper and has a more lasting impact. True transformation happens at the heart level and this is the ultimate goal of public speakers: to speak in such a way that it evokes a positive and powerful transformation in the way the audience members think, and live. Paying attention to this dimension means you purposefully plan what you will do to help your audience remember the points and connect with them in relevant and meaningful ways. So for example if you plan to tell story to illustrate a point, how you tell the story may be crucial in how your audience receives it. A story about your personal experience versus a “second hand story” will have different effect on your audience so it is important to know when to tell which story.
These are tips to help you think about this dimension. If you desire to learn more about how to maximize these 3 dimensions enroll in one of the trainings offered on my website or sign-up for speech coaching sessions. Investing in yourself is one of the greatest assets you bring with you in any job, relationship, or future opportunity.
Next week you will learn about the third dimension you need to pay attention to: the environment in which you speak.
See you next week!
