Be Known as Similar, not Special!
Not long ago I heard a woman speaker who had gained great success over the years. Her message was that she went from rags to riches and told just how she did it. Although she was giving the process and conveying how she did it I was left feeling uninspired by what she had to say. As a result I had no desire to look further into her programs or resources. As I reflected on why, I realized that how she communicated her journey made her appear “special”, and therefore did not leave me with the sense that if she can do it, then so can I. Even though I knew in my head I could. My response was purely an emotional one but one that is key in connecting with any audience.
As a speaker “when you lift yourself up, you let your audience down.” Unless you come across as “similar” to your audience they will not connect with your message nor be motivated to act on any steps you give or anything you offer as a resource.
It’s critical that you tell your story and the journey that took you from where you were to where you are today. However, in doing so, it’s important to point out where you are no different than those in your audience, and how the things that helped you can help them. In order to connect with your audience you need to be relevant and relatable. If you desire to have a transformational impact when you speak, become known as “similar and not special”.
