The Most Under-Emphasized Part of Communication

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they couldn’t maintain eye contact for 5 seconds?  As they spoke they looked down or away from you? What went on inside of you when that happened? What did you feel or think?

The worst is when you are in a conversation and the person speaking keeps looking over your shoulder at someone else in the room making gestures to them or giving them more eye contact than you. If you are like me, I feel like getting up a walking away in that moment.  Sadly, I have been one of those people who looked over my listener’s shoulder and became sorely aware of how offensive that it is.

Eye contact is the most underemphasized part of communication yet it is one of the most crucial areas that help you establish TRUST and CREDIBILITY with your listeners. Making appropriate eye contact with your listeners is absolutely essential as a speaker to deliver a convincing message.  Frequent and intentional eye contact is your ongoing link with your audience.
