Leveraging Your Experiences
Patricia Fripp, well-sought after Speaking Coach says that “the secret to developing good content is simply this: you have to live an interesting life and converse with interesting people.” When I first heard her say that , I asked myself, “what about if you haven’t lived an interesting life nor conversed with interesting people? Can you still develop good content?”
If you were wondering the same thing, the answer is “yes, you can!”
One of the beautiful aspects of becoming a speaker who goes beyond communicating to connecting with your audience is that your personal experiences are valuable content. No matter what your history or type of presentation there are stories, events and experiences in your personal and professional life that will be valuable to include as content.
Where you can get stuck is if you start to minimize your experiences as irrelevant or not interesting. I want to caution you to stop! Don’t do that! You will be amazed at how even one sentence from your past can have huge impact in a presentation when appropriately inserted. Fripp suggests a process to follow when you analyze and organize your experiences. I encourage you to keep a file with the following information and lists:
– All the people who have influenced you in your life.
– Every manager or boss you’ve ever worked for.
– Write down what you have learned from each of them. Even if they weren’t nice, they can provide an example of a negative impact.
– How do these lessons play out in your life up until today?
– List all the turning points in your life, who you met, and significant moments.
– What is some of the best advice you have been given?
That should trigger a flow of ideas about how to powerfully leverage your experiences to connect with your audience and create presentations and messages that are remembered and relevant.
