Value Progress over Perfection!

Perfection is an unattainable goal, excellence however is not. As a teenager I fell into the trap of perfectionism thinking that I could execute my life perfectly on my own, never messing up. This kind of thinking led me down a track of becoming addicted to running and snared by an eating disorder called anorexia. Attaining perfection is a limiting belief. Through a series of choices , a community, and great coaching I overcame the trap and today I value ongoing progress over perfection and as a result, experience tremendous freedom.

When it comes to speaking, a practiced speech is better than a perfect speech! Why?  A  “perfect speech” usually lacks authenticity, connection, and life. The speaker is often too focused on being perfect, saying things right, and appearing exemplary to make meaningful connections with the audience.  When you are focused on yourself, how you are doing rather than on how the audience is receiving,  you lose the ability to be relevant and dynamic.  As World Class speaker, Craig Valentine says, “in order to have  an effect, you must first connect”.    When you aim for perfection you often end up coming across as reciting, memorized and simply dry, even if you have planned humor.  If perfection is a problem you struggle with, I encourage you to seek a coach to help you overcome this trap. Otherwise, you will find yourself struggling to connect authentically, and  lack transformational impact.

Take the advice of World Class speakers – Don’t strive for perfection, strive for connection!
