A Simple SMILE will take you the Extra Mile!

Several years ago I worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I started my career working with children who were delayed in their speech and language development and then I opened my own practice specializing in accent reduction with adults. Early on in my university degree training I was taught that 93% of what a person communicates is actually non-verbal. That means only 7% of what you communicate is conveyed through your words alone.

In the next few weeks you will be learning about some of the communication keys that make up that non-verbal area.  These all come into play in the delivery process of your message or speech. Even if the percentages were much less such as 90%, tell yourself that you will connect much deeper and longer with your audience if you focus your energy on developing the habits that impact your non-verbal communication.

The first habit you need to develop in order to build trust and credibility with your audience is to smile often (and appropriately).   As already covered in an  earlier week, the audience is usually most skeptical about the speaker at the beginning  of the presentation or message.  As a speaker, that is usually the time you are most nervous.  If not properly planned, you can see how the opening can soon become a disaster.  The simplest thing you can do to exude confidence which will also help your audience gain confidence in you is to simply smile.  Before you even say a word- smile warmly while looking at the audience. Think of it as your introduction to your audience. When you first meet someone you usually smile and shake their hand. This has the same affect.

It is of course understood that when you smile, it needs to be genuine and not forced. Otherwise it will communicate a different message. Throughout your presentation remember to smile at other appropriate times  to continue to connect with your audience and build trust and credibility.

A simple smile will bridge your connection, build a warm atmosphere, and  boost the audience’s confidence  in you.

If it helps you, here is a  saying I came up with to remind me :

” A simple smile can take you the extra mile” ………towards building trust and credibility.
