Become a Student of  Effective Speaking!

Do you REALLY want to improve your communication skills, and become a more effective speaker?  If so, then it will require that you become a STUDENT of communication. This means that you adopt a mindset of being a lifelong learner. According to Jim Key, 2003 World Champion of Public Speaking you specifically need to become  the kind of student that is committed, focused and involved.

Committed- This requires a decision to intentionally learn from other speakers as you listen, observe and apply. The day after Craig Valentine won the world championship in 1999, he immediately went to the bookstore and picked up a book on public speaking. Why? Because he was committed to being a lifelong student and knew there was always something more he could learn and improve upon.

Focused- make it a point to set goals to improve in specific areas of your speaking competencies. For example, if you are learning  how to incorporate storytelling more effectively, take note of how other effective speakers do it. Ask questions and become aware of how you feel as an audience member when a speaker communicates in a certain way. Take note of what worked and what didn’t when you hear other speakers as well as when you evaluate your own.

Involved– This means that you not only listen and observe but you actually apply what  you learn. Perhaps this means changing how you are currently doing  things.  Be open to experiment and adjust along the way. This is the essence of mastering a skill.
