How you Appear Draws your Audience Near?
As you study the most effective speakers you will notice that they take great care in their appearance. I am not referring to having a perfectly matched outfit, perfect hair or sporting the newest fashion trend. I am referring to the fact that they understand that your appearance is part of your presentation. If you have a sloppy appearance or soiled clothing believe it or not, it may decrease the audience’s ability to trust you. Now if you are speaking to a group of skateboarders then having baggy pants and ripped jeans may be what is needed to win their trust. Knowing your audience is important. You want to avoid wearing anything that may serve as a distraction to your audience. Let’s talk about when speaking to a mixed audience. As a man, it seems to be simpler because a standard dress suit is easy to wear, acceptable, and not distracting. As a woman, it can get a little more complicated. You want to maintain professionalism, while not compromising your feminity. Avoid wearing bold patterned clothing, and large or noisy jewellery as they can be very distracting!
How you show up communicates a message to your audience before you even speak. Does it take away or add to your presentation? As vain as it may seem it is actually an important element in helping to connect with your audience from the get go! You still want to be yourself, and be aware of what adjustments you may need to make to eliminate communicating any negative or inconsistent message to your audience.
