Increase the Speed with which You Succeed!
When you face an audience that doubts your credibility, the best way to gain trust and credibility in a short period of time is to open with an interesting fact or statistic from their world. Patricia Fripp, world class speaker and much sought-after speech coach, tells of a time when she was asked to speak to a group of ministers of a certain religion. She knew that she was going to be the only speaker who was not from that religion nor a minister. As a result, she knew that in the eyes of most of the audience she would not be seen as a credible speaker. She was asked to speak about giving a more charismatic sermon. So to gain credibility faster she opened her first presentation with a known fact from their book of religion. This was an effective way to not only catch their attention but to increase their ability to trust her as someone who they could learn from.
Whenever you are preparing to speak to a specific audience, try to look at the situation from the point of view of that audience and anticipate any barriers that may need to be overcome right from your opening.
