First things First
Whether you are speaking on a tele-seminar or on a stage, you have already learned that establishing trust and credibility is absolutely essential. If your audience is familiar with you and consists of regular clients then you can modify your opening to suit that context. Say you have been invited as a guest on a tele-seminar to give your signature talk to a new audience. In addition to opening with a bang, it is important to spend the first 5-10 minutes of your 60 minute talk building trust with your audience. This can be accomplished in two primary ways:
Include enough background information about yourself to help the audience become familiar with you and your expertise in the topic. This is best done when the host introduces you. Write your own introduction so the host gives the accolades, and not you. Then as you start your talk you can establish more credibility by sharing stories or testimonials of previous clients.
Another way to help your audience become familiar with you and trust you is to share some area of frailty or flaw you had to overcome. This helps the audience feel like you can relate to where they are at. For example, you may be speaking about a 4 part process you use to help young girls overcome an eating disorder and establish a healthy lifestyle. As part of your opener, include the fact that you also struggled with an eating disorder years ago. And after trying everything else to get better that you stumbled upon this process which finally gave you what you needed to break the cycles and become healthy. This bridges the gap between them seeing you simply as a so-called expert and them trusting that you understand their daily struggles.
Building trust in these two ways helps you make a better connection with your audience from the start, and increases the likelihood of them staying engaged throughout the rest of your talk.
